W'ton and South Staffs honour

CASTROL - E. & S. RALLY IS TOPS

For the third time in recent years, and more often than any other club, Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club have won the "rally of the year" award from a group of Britain's top rally drivers to the 1968 Castrol-"Express and Star" rally.
The club and the rally hold this title for the second year in succession and the award will therefore return to the rally's clerk of course for the two events. Richard Harper of Chetwynd Gardens, Stafford Road, Cannock.
The rally first won the award in 1962.
It is an award started by a group of top rally drivers taking the name "Ecurie Cod Fillet" from its founder Roy Fidler a fish merchant. This year the voting was augmented by the top ten drivers in the Motoring News Championship. The Castrol-Express and Star rally gained 38 per cent of the votes. The nearest rival was another Welsh event Knowldale MC's Rally of the Plains which was given a 22 per cent vote.

NEXT YEAR'S

The Castrol-"Express and Star" event wins the award in competition with such major events as two international rallies in Britain, the Gulf London and the Scottish the Circuit of Ireland another international event as well as all other national events and even the London-Sydney marathon.
Planning for the 1969 event is well underway. It will be held during the night of September 19 and the following day starting and finishing in Shrewsbury.
