POPULAR belief that the Welsh hate motor rallies, which, according to some people, shatter their Saturday night peace weekend after weekend, is being disproved by the Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club in their preparations for next month's "Express and Star" British national event.
This year the rally will run from Colwyn Bay through mountain roads of Mid-Wales to Llandrindod Wells, and, except for such short distances of main road that are in course, every one of the quiet Welsh roads has been covered personally by the rally organising team and every householder along the route visited.
What has endeared the club and the rally to the people who live on the route - many of whom can speak English but not read it - has been a letter of introduction to the rally written in Welsh.
Translated, the letter says. "We know many people living along the route will be taking an interest in our passage and a great number will be watching the cars go by." and; "May we thank you for your kind indulgence and suggest that if you have point or matter you would like to raise, you get in touch with us and we will endeavour to clarlfy it for you." Says the clerk of the course, Richard Harper "The letter has gone down wonderfully well. We are having to have more printed so that more people can have them. We do not expect any opposition."
Entries for the event which counts for all the major British rally championships, and is to be held on the night March 13-14, is now over 100.
