Change of Clerk of Course

Harry Morgan
Harry Morgan.

Harry Morgan who was to act as Clerk of the Course on many subsequent 'Stars' , expected his first 'Star' to be 'a corker, especially if it rains'. An RAC observer was present on the event as W&SSCC had applied for a national permit for the next year's event. A good entry of 81 cars started from Wolverhampton, Oxford, Liverpool, Nottingham, and Hereford and the local starters were flagged off from the aerodrome at Pendeford (this was before the houses were built!) by Innes Ireland the F1 racer and converged onto the common route at 'Control X' at Church Stretton where they were issued with a marked map and restarted at midnight on a 196 mile route along the minor roads of south Shropshire and Herefordshire. Sealed watches, provided by Ingersoll, were carried in the cars and 10 points per minute late were recorded at 29 time controls.

Val Harper (Standard 10) retired before control X with a broken spring and Pauline Brock rolled her Renault Dauphine through a hedge and into a field. The competitors returned to Pendeford for driving tests at the finish.
