Rally Roundup
EXPRESS AND STAR
In the past three years the image created by the Castrol Express & Star Rally, one of the few old "newspaper" events which have stuck, has been one of day and night special stages in the forests. This year it will return to an older-style and will consist of a series of tight road sections each culminating in a selective. Furthermore, each of the selectives will be followed by a relaxed section to allow lost time to be regained. As a livener (that is, if you consider that one is needed!) the organisers have found it possible to include a few laps of a private circuit. At the moment we won't talk about its location, but we are assured that this will possess a high degree of entertainment value.
The Star, 13th in the championship series, will take place during the night of September 19 and will be routed on maps* 116, 117, 118 and 128. No local knowledge will be necessary and plotting can be done at home. The start will be at the Shrewsbury Smithfield (118/512157), first car leaving at 21.01. The finish will be at Hughes' Garage, Portmadoc.
Route cards will be posted to competitors in good time. But take note that certain roads along the route will be observed and anyone found recceing will be excluded.
Last year Stuart Turner, then with Castrol, took Clement Freud along to see the Star, and his thoughts on what he saw were published last January in the Castrol Achievements Book for 1969. This year another personality will make an appearance - Jimmy Greaves. He will be conducted around by, yes, Stuart Turner, and will present both the starting flag and the awards.
